We hear daily about peace-keeping efforts (some that work, some that don't) around the world. What about "earth-keeping?" Why not set up something akin to the UN peace-keeping forces to help care for the environment? Richard Shepard, associate editor of "The Earth Times," suggests that we do just that.

Earth-Keepers

The United Nations should establish earth-keeping forces not unlike the present peace-keeping forces, figures Richard F. Shepard. Shepard is associate editor of "The Earth Times," a newspaper founded after the United Nations' 1992 summit on environmental issues and sustainable development held in Rio de Janeiro. His idea was inspired by the UN peace-keeping forces, soldiers whose services are volunteered by their countries. "How about something of the same for the environment?," he writes in the February 28 issue of "The Earth Times":
